Kentuck Knob

About a year ago we went Falling Water; a once privately owned house built by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a perfect, sunny day and the site wasn't crowded with tourists. After visiting, we knew that we had to see other creations built by Wright!

Kentuck Knob is only a few minutes down the road from Falling Water, so you could even visit both sites in the same day. Wright built the house for the Hagan Family (yes, the family who owned Hagan ice cream!). Upon approaching the house, one can see that the house is built literally into the hill. Doing this on purpose, Wright's theory was as follows:

"No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other."

The house is one huge representation of organic architecture; architecture that works with nature and the surroundings available when building. Filled with intriguing shapes and angles (mostly hexagons and triangles) Wright built everything in the house for a specific reason.

There are two tours you can go on; a guided tour and an in-depth tour. Ryan and I went on the guided tour. Not only was it cheaper, but it left us with plenty of time to explore the grounds on our own. The in-depth tour offers, you guess it, a more in-depth interpretation of the house itself, offering more information not provided on the guided tours. Not only can you see the house, but there is also a sculpture garden the grounds with over 30 sculptures (including a part of the Berlin Wall!!!).

If that's not enough to convince you to go, the view in the back of the house is SPECTACULAR.

The trip was definitely worth the drive and the money! If you have a free weekend, we highly recommend heading out to Kentuck Knob, Falling Water, or one of Wright's impressive buildings!
